If you could choose between two chassis with the same engine, which one would you pick? Most people who can afford one can buy both, but the rest of us can only dream and race on the bench to see which one we like best. This is the first time that Porsche has given the mid-engine car a flat-six engine with a 4-liter displacement and high revs that meet GT3 standards. The experience can’t be had in anything else. I think I’ll always choose the GT4 with a manual transmission, but the GT4 RS, which only comes with a PDK, might be the most impressive sports car Porsche has ever made. It’s just a great piece all the way through. I don’t think the GT3 can make the same claim. It’s cool but not as cool as the GT4 RS.
“The GT3 is the best.” Different in every way. Very clear. Metcalfe says during the test drive, “I’m not fighting the steering, it’s just pure.” His list of problems with the car is very short, but I agree with every single one of them. It’s a little too fast for the street, and the manual should have come with it. It costs a bit too much. That’s just about it. Everything else about it is great without question. This is a car that probably shouldn’t exist and might never exist again. If the next generation of the Cayman is all-electric, it could be the last pure RS mid-engine car from Porsche. And that makes me think even more that it should be on a stick.
If I have to choose between the two, it’s pretty clear to me what I should do. Every time, a GT4 RS is better than a GT3. It’s just a different kind of car. And it might be the last one like it.
